about

This is a Brett Myers epic. He's written a few of them in his time and they are classics. It was a privilege to get to work on one. This one had me stumped for a long time as it is a highly structured song and I couldn't find the melody so instead I went in search of the rhythm. I wrote out the beats and then worked the melody up from that. I had no idea what the song was going to be about and then one hot summer night as I was sweating away half asleep and thinking I could feel a breeze when there wasn't one and that's where it started. It then became a song about the kinds of trysts you have in summer when you are young - you know falling in and out of love over a few months when it is really hot and everything is a alive but moving languidly because of the heat. The sense it will never end, knowing it will, of being in a kind of Babylonian dream, and the sirens call of it all and all that goes with it.

lyrics

DOWN (TO THE SEA)

Rumours of a breeze upon your skin
Truth is its summer heat that you're breathing in
Somnolence is the only world you know
Languid is her breath as she moves slow

Secrets, secrets that lovers tell
And little lies those little lies you know them all too well
Brightness, brightness is all that you can see
The future is now, where you want to be

Run through the forest running through the trees
Fast through the shadows and light, rush into the sea
Wash away your secrets, wash away your sins
Loose yourself in the cool embrace of all that you have been

I was dreaming that I was dreaming in my dream
Babylon, oh Babylon I hear you singing to me
Somewhere other than awake, but not quite asleep
Forever and the blue sky stretching out before me, calling me

Run through the forest running through the trees
Fast through the shadows and light, rush into the sea
Wash away your secrets, wash away your sins
Loose yourself in the cool embrace of all that you have been
