about

Brett played this haunting tune to me one day and it stayed with me on my two hour drive home from his place. It had such a yearning quality to it I wanted to escape - from what I don't know - but out of nowhere the line 'take me away' popped into my head as did the vocal melody for the chorus. When I got home I wrote a rough version of the lyrics in about 10 minutes.

There are a couple of lines in it that I've had for years. For example - "all your houses and all your rooms are bathed in the light of a flickering blue" was written when I lived in Newtown for a long time. When my kids were little and teething at night I'd walk them through the streets of Newtown and I noticed the front rooms of all the terraces had tv's in them flickering away in blue as the old cathode ray screens used to do. It was an image that stuck with me for years. I thought it sad that all of us were living in little boxes wasting our time away watching crap telly, and realised that once upon a time we sat around fires and told stories and that maybe this wasn't so different, it's just that we now did it in private and had the conversations about it at work in the tea room.

Anyway the song is about living in the heart of a big city (which I sadly no longer do) and escaping to a special place up the far north coast of NSW (which luckily I do regularly). We all need to escape some time, doesn't matter what from, or how. We just gotta do it.

lyrics

TAKE ME AWAY

In your cities down on the street
Move to the rhythm of all those feet
Feed your distraction with your conceits
The artificial rises and is complete

All your houses and all your rooms
Are bathed in the light of a flickering blue
Through the ether and on our screens
The banality before us is so obscene

Oh take me away, take me away from here
Take me away, take me away from here my friend

Through these valleys and on this beach
I move to the rhythm of a world so sweet
In this forest and through these trees
I move to the sound of a sweet melody

Oh take me away, take me away to here
Take me away, take me away to here my friend

Oh take me away, take me away to here
Take me away, take me away to here my friend
Take me away, take me away to here
Take me away, take me away to here my friend

In this valley and in these trees
I get to see all these stars for free
Through this forest and through these trees
I move to the sound of a sweet melody
